Dr. Thomas Henkel acquired more than 15 years experience in Pharma R&D at different managerial positions.
Dr. Henkel is organic chemist by training and obtained his PhD with Prof. Zeeck at the University of Goettingen, Germany. Before he joined Bayer in 1992, he worked with Prof. Vederas in Canada in the area of biochemistry and NMR analytic. Within Bayer he started as medicinal chemist and gained over time several additional responsibilities, e.g. extramural repository sample acquisition, operation of scientific co-operations with China; 1998 he became director of the Natural Product chemistry department. In 2000 he got promoted as the head of the Bayer life science centre, and received “procuration” in 2001. Between 2002-05, he worked as vice president at Bayer HealthCare Pharma Research and Development and was heading the department of enabling technologies responsible for Target ID/validation, bioinformatics, protein biochemistry and natural product lead ID comprising 64FTEs.
For more than five years he served as an executive member of the European research committee as well as the international research committee bearing responsibility for portfolio management and strategic decision making of Bayer HealthCare Pharma research at the European site and globally, respectively.
Dr. Henkel co-founded IMD early 2006 and, as the managing director, is responsible for the scientific and strategic direction.
With his functions, Dr. Henkel gained experiences in multiple indication areas, enabling technologies, project management as well as processes regarding productive lead discovery, embedded in a global co-operation environment. He is author of more than 20 peer reviewed publications in the field of natural product and bio-chemistry. Within Bayer he was responsible for all aspects regarding the RIO-convention, CBD and ABS issues. In this function he was member of an expert team within the VfA (Verband forschender Arzneimittelhersteller) and was sent by the German government as an expert to the UN-CBD conventions.

Certain European markets are already well developed regarding natural product based health care products. The market is growing and the needs for new innovative products with a given track record and proved biological activity is obvious. However, with the emerging integration process within the European Union, a continuous process in adaptation and unification of regulatory aspects is observed. This also leads to a more stringent process towards high quality requirements.
This presentation tries to summaries recent trends in the market place in conjunction with the regulatory requirements to bring innovative new natural products into the European market.
